TNO at Holst Centre today announces that it is spinning off its 3D battery activities under the name LionVolt B.V. The new company will accelerate the development of a solid-state battery based on the 3D technology developed by TNO at Holst Centre over the past five years of R&D.
The technology is based on 3D thin-film solid-state layers. Compared with currently used lithium batteries, it is intended to be lighter and safer, recharge rapidly, deliver higher energy density, be intrinsically safe, and have a longer product lifespan. A proof-of-concept of a fully solid-state 3D thin-film battery was demonstrated by the team in December 2020, showing that 3D batteries can be produced at scale.
LionVolt is co-founded by Karl McGoldrick (CEO) and Sandeep Unnikrishnan (CTO). The Holst Centre and TNO continue as research partners. LionVolt is in the process of finalising seed funding to accelerate development.
